| Wednesday evening marked a significant milestone for fire services in Silver Spring Township. After more than a year of brainstorming and meetings, united by a common goal, the transition became official on Wednesday, May 27. The Silver Spring Township Department of Fire & Rescue Services is now formally established.
This transition allows the department to operate under standard sets of operational policies across the system, implement consistent training standards, share manpower, and engage in coordinated long-range planning. These changes, along with additional improvements, will be evident as the department moves forward. No longer operating as a contractor, the department is officially recognized as the township’s fire department, and all chief officers will now be sworn officials of Silver Spring Township.
On the same evening, William Brown was appointed as the first official Fire Chief of Silver Spring Township, with further officer promotions expected in the coming weeks. The township administration and supervisors were instrumental throughout this entire process, working alongside the department to prepare for the future. Appreciation is also extended to the officers and members of Silver Spring Community and New Kingstown Fire Companies for their dedication and the many hours devoted to this transition.
Please note - both fire companies will remain as their own chartered entities, but operating from under the same umbrella |
